Salon Email Marketing 101: How to Get Clients to Open, Click, and Book

If you’ve ever sent a salon email, heard nothing back, and quietly decided the whole thing was broken, this is just for you.

I hear it from salon owners all the time: “I don’t think my clients even open the emails.” And I get it. It’s frustrating to out effort into something and feel like no one noticed. But here’s what I’ve found after working with salon owners one-on-one: the issue almost never is that clients aren’t opening your email. It’s that you’re not showing up consistently enough for them to expect you.

Today, I’m breaking down why your salon emails fall flat, what consistent email actually looks like, and how to get started, even if you’ve tried before and got crickets. Let’s dig in.

The Real Reason Salon Emails Fall Flat

It’s not because you’re boring or clients aren’t interested in hearing from you. It’s because you aren’t showing up consistently.

Here’s what I see over and over again: a salon owner sends one email every few months, usually to promote something, then wonders why no one opens it. Sound familiar?

Here’s the good news: Your clients want to hear from you. They gave you access to their inbox, something they check every single day. But if you’re only reaching out every six months, those warm, loyal clients slowly go cold. Not because they stopped loving your work, but because out of sight really does mean out of mind.

Random emails can’t maintain a relationship, but consistent ones can completely change it.

What Consistent Email Actually Looks Like for a Salon

There’s a misconception that consistent salon emails have to be a big production. But after working with salon owners across the country, I can tell you that one email a month is the sweet spot for both salon owners and clients.

Why? It’s manageable for busy stylists and lands right in the middle of a typical six-to-eight week rebook cycle, meaning it’s a natural reminder for clients to get back on the books.

If you’re not sure what to write, start here:

  • Share a salon or team update clients want to hear.

  • Dive into a product you’ve been loving and why. (This one drives retail sales without a single awkward upsell.)

  • Break down a tip, like what a bond builder actually does, how to maintain that blowout, or another question you answer every week in the salon.

  • Add a simple “we have openings this month” with a direct link to book.

That’s it. It doesn’t have to be fancy or flashy. Just something genuine, in your voice, sent consistently.

Common Email Mistakes Stylists Make (& How to Fix Them)

Before we get into how to start, let’s talk about what gets in the way. These are the most common email mistakes I see…and every single one is fixable.

  • Sending from a Gmail address. We all know and love Gmail, emailing from yoursalon@gmail.com in 2026 quietly signals to spam filters (and clients) that you’re not quite a professional brand. Most website providers offer branded email addresses for just a few dollars a month. It’s worth it.

  • Letting AI write everything. If you have a packed to-do list, it might feel easier to let ChatGPT write your email for you. While the words might be fine, AI strips away the personality…and clients can tell.

  • Use too many fonts. Five fonts reads like visual chaos. Stick to one header font and one body font from your website to create a polished, branded look.

  • Using flyers or text-heavy images. Heavy images are slow to load, often flagged by spam filters, and can look cluttered. Keep images simple and let your words do the work.

  • No clear call-to-action. Every email should make it obvious what you want the reader to do next, whether it’s book, shop, or reply. One strong CTA per email is plenty, two at most. More than that, and clients do nothing.

If you cringed at any of these, you’re not alone. Most of the salon owners I work with were doing at least three of them when we first connected. It’s not your fault; no one ever showed us what a strategic salon email was supposed to look like.

How to Start Sending Salon Emails Consistently

The best way to start sending salon emails is just to start. Don’t wait for it to be perfect or for the right moment. Just start.

  1. Pick a date to send the email and write it down on your calendar. Treat it like an appointment on your books.

  2. Choose three topics to write about in your email, like a product tip, styling tutorial, salon update, or seasonal reminder. Make sure you have a clear CTA.

  3. Write it, then send it. A slightly imperfect email that actually goes out beats a flawless one that never does.

If you’re ready to stop piecing it together on your own, Elevated Email was built for this exact moment. You get a brand-new, ready-to-send newsletter template every single month, guided Flodesk setup, automated workflows, and mini lessons to turn your emails into bookings, retail sales, and local SEO. If you don’t want to figure it out from scratch, get instant access to Elevated Email now.

When salon owners start sending consistently, the shift is real: clients reply, ask about products you mentioned, and walk in saying, “I saw your email about the toning gloss. Can we do that today?” Your books fill steadily, retail sells without any awkward conversation, and the relationship stays warm between appointments.

You don’t need a perfect plan to get there. Remember, done beats perfect every time.

Your clients already love you. Email is just how you remind them of that between appointments.
